Recently I was out to coffee with a fabulous group of girls in the wedding industry, and the evening was full of great conversation, of both the personal and business variety ( I even shared the story of my pet chicken... more on that some other time.) But towards the end of the evening another sweet photographer asked me this: "How did you explode?"
Now I think at this point, I need to make my first part of the answer to that question very clear. As I told her, I don't think I have "exploded" in the wedding photography world. We are a small team, with big goals, and while we have grown a ton since our first wedding, we still have so so far to go, and even more to learn! With that, I think the real question, and the answer I want to drive home is, how did we grow, and improve over the past few years? And the answer is quite simple.
INVEST IN YOUR BUSINESS
I know what you are ALL thinking right now! Nicole, we don't have a billion dollars to toss around! Well, fun fact, neither did we. Many of you may or may not know exactly how our company came about (and I promise to do a more in depth series on this one day) but let me just say we started this company while Jordan was in Grad School (i.e no job) and I quit my full time job (i.e had no job either) and made this company our only source of income, FROM DAY ONE. Crazy right?
So needless to say, we didn't have a ton to invest into our company in terms of money. But we invested almost everything we had into purchasing the BEST gear on the market. Then we invested our TIME into this business. Since I was full time, I devoted every working hour into marketing, branding, and networking. And you know what? We started to grow.
INVESTING TIME GAVE US OUR INITIAL MOMENTUM
But time, while valuable, isn't enough. This is the foundation to the notion that, if you work on it, and wait, opportunity will just magically arrive, While I think this is a sweet idea, I just don't personally think it is true. Business and growth doesn't just "appear." Spearheading a company takes risk, and that is SCARY!
So what was the key turning point for our brand, and the investment RISKS that were worthwhile? I can say without a doubt, that investing in education and experience took us from being relatively unknown, to where we are today.... still not famous by any means ( hey Jose Villa!) , but can usually find a familiar face :) I know it can seem really daunting to put your business profits back into your company, but honestly it is the BEST thing you can do for yourself! Our experiences working alongside other industry leaders, whether it was conferences, workshops, or styled shoots, helped us learn, and grow so much, and for that I will forever be grateful.
investing our profits back into our brand was the key
This concept of investing in great experiences is something I firmly believe in. So much so that I decided to launch THE STUDIO! This is a hands on time for photographers to come together, and work with details, models, and vendors in an open space- giving you the time and resources to grow personally and professionally, and hopefully spring board your work to the next level! Sounds awesome right? Well we would love to see you there, so download our information guide, and read through all the lovely. We are sure you will be as excited as we are.
welp. This MIGHT just be the longest post of all time, full of nitty gritty and the not so glamorous side, but that doesn't make it any less important! So cheers to you for making it to the end of this post, thanks as always, for reading :)
